Will Vicodin help a migraine?
As you already probably know by now, Vicodin is a strong painkiller that is commonly prescribed to people suffering from pain that is ranging from moderate to severe. It is used for treating pain that arises from injuries, operations and certain medical conditions that are accompanied by severe pain. It is therefore quite understandable that people are wondering if Vicodin will help them with their migraines. However, in order to better explain should Vicodin be used for migraines, we should say a thing or two about the migraines and Vicodin as well.
Vicodin works by affecting the central nervous system and reducing the sensation of pain by binding to receptors which usually register the pain sensations that come from the place on the body where the pain comes from. Migraines are in most cases caused by the swelling of the blood vessels in the head which then press on the nerves and cause pain that can be excruciating at times. As you have probably worked out for yourself, Vicodin will not address the underlying issue that causes migraine headaches, but will only mask the pain and reduce the pain. There are other medications that are more suitable for people suffering from migraines and that can also address the swelling of the blood vessels that cause the pain. This is why Vicodin is usually not prescribed for migraines.
Another reason why Vicodin is not exactly the perfect solution for treating migraines is that migraines are chronic in nature and can occur for many, many years. In fact, the majority of patients will experience them throughout their lives. And as we all know, Vicodin should not be taken for longer periods of time both because the patient can develop tolerance to the medication, meaning that it does not work the same after some time, as well as dependency, meaning that the patient may develop a habit of taking the drug.Vicodin may be excellent at alleviating the pain, but this does not mean that it should be used for every condition that results in pain, like for example migraines.
